After years of burning the candle at both ends, I finally realised the importance of mindfulness and looking after my own mental wellbeing - a key value when starting this business.
Slowing down and learning to enjoy the little things has been crucial to running my own business. I start every day with yoga or meditation, setting my intentions for the day. My to-do list is ever-growing and it is essential to make peace with never crossing everything off. I appreciate all aspects of my job - listening to music while making cards, the smell of the ink and the paints, the feel of the textured paper, the sunlight shining through the window as I work.
One of the main reasons for starting Catkin Crafts was to improve my work-life balance. I wanted to be able to care for my daughter and look after our home, whilst earning an income and doing something I enjoy - all without feeling like I'm running around like a headless chicken all the time.
At the end of every day, I reflect on all the things I am grateful for. I am incredibly thankful for all the support I have received since starting this small business and I appreciate how fortunate I am to have this opportunity. At Catkin Crafts, I make cards and gifts so others can show their appreciation for the ones they love too.
I believe that using your imagination and doing something creative is an important aspect of looking after your mental health. I love sketching and coming up with new ideas and I also love to use colour! In addition to giving me joy as I create them, the items I make at Catkin Crafts can help brighten other people's homes and bring smiles to faces.
What does the future hold?
I would like to create more products that encourage mindfulness and positivity. I also plan to start a new hashtag day on Twitter (#InspirationFri) where other creatives can share their inspiration with each other and encourage creativity. I am also looking into mental health charities to support through Catkin Crafts.
